Nutrition And Hydration

I was asked to provide Training and consultancy services by a client that provides care for members of the armed services who have developed mental health or alcohol related problems in Scotland. The home improved on their CI (CQC equivalent in Scotland) ratings after training and consultancy had been given and implemented. As did the wellbeing of the residents

I had completed a full 2 day Nutritional and Catering Audit along with a Training Needs Analysis of what was already being provided – this included observing and having discussions the Catering and Care teams, analysing both the Kitchen and Care plans, going through the Catering Management Systems, looking at staffing levels and skill sets and having discussions with Management.
It was agreed that I would deliver a 1 day training programme to all the staff including management so as to ensure that everyone within the home was following the same protocols followed by a programme of consultancy and coaching over a 6 month period to allow for a system that could be closely reviewed, evaluated and fine-tuned.
Outcomes:
• All staff were fully aware of their role in nutrition and hydration
• A restructuring of the kitchen team to allow for the needs of the residents to be met
• A reduction of the use of lactulose and senna
• A reduction in incontinence
• A reduction in UTI’s
• An increase in the well-being and activity levels of the residents
• A decrease in behavioural issues (this is thought to mainly have come about due to the reduction in UTI’s)
• A menu system in place to allow the residents a more varied choice of food and the times that food was available.

Catering Management

I was asked to provide Training and consultancy services by a client with 12 Care Homes across the UK. This was carried out within one of their 65 bedded Dementia Care Homes, who although had a ‘Good’ CQC report , wished to take the service they provided to the next level when it came to food and nutrition as this was an area that they were wanting to improve

It was agreed that on this visit I would spend 10 days with the Catering department to provide training and implementation of a new Catering Management system to allow for a system that could be closely reviewed, evaluated and fine-tuned.
The training and Systems were successfully implemented and major changes and cost savings (over £35K a year) were expected over the next year
This work was carried out just prior to lockdown being implemented and due to the new way of working and systems in place the Catering Department were prepared for and were able to carry out their duties without interruption. The company are asking for similar programmes that meet the specific needs across their other sites around the UK.
